What The Market Desk is

One edition a day on the labour market, written from named public statistics (national statistics offices, Eurostat, the ILO, the World Bank, the OECD) and from the live supply of openings the product runs on. Every edition is published in sixteen languages, and every figure carries its source, its vintage and, where a number was derived, the arithmetic.

The Desk corrects in place and says so. An edition that quotes a first-print statistic is revisited when the revision lands. Superlatives are checked against the complete list, not the convenient one.

• 22 September 2026In South Korea, two people in five aged 65 or over are in work. In France, one in twenty-four.
• 21 September 2026In Jordan, two employees in five are paid below two thirds of the national median. In Portugal, one in twenty-five.
• 20 September 2026Nearly nine in ten of India’s workers hold an informal job. In France, three in a hundred do.
• 19 September 2026Women are 45% of Japan’s workers and 14% of its managers. In the Philippines they are a larger share of managers than of workers.
• 18 September 2026Forty-five in a hundred young women in Pakistan are neither working nor studying. In the Netherlands it is four in a hundred young people, women and men alike.
• 17 September 2026The working week is 50 hours in the United Arab Emirates and 30 in the Netherlands. Men work longer than women in 108 of 110 countries.
